Gary Russell dominates Kiko Martinez en route to a stoppage win!
WBC featherweight champ Gary Russell Jr (29-1, 17KOs) looks to stay busy against Kiko Martinez (39-8-2, 28KOs). The Maryland champion showed up dressed as Shaka Zulu on his ring entrance and looks poised to put on an exciting performance.
The fight starts up fast with Russell landing hard jabs and Martinez looking to counter. Martinez is very aggressive in walking in, trying to get to the champ’s body.
In round two, Russell opens up a cut on Martinez’s left eye. The WBC champ is on fire as he looks like he’s in the gym working out on a double end bag.
Kiko Martinez is showing great resolve as he keeps coming forward and remains undaunted. The former champion is occasionally landing shots, even though he’s constantly being countered by Russell.
The referee is definitely showing concern about the cut over Martinez’s left eye. So at the end of round five, the fight is stopped.
To end the fight, Gary Russell makes a very creative call out of WBA champion Leo Santa Cruz by donning a shirt saying “Leo’s next? What’s up call Al,” “Al” obviously referring to Al Haymon.
Then, in his post-fight comments, the featherweight champion mentioned super featherweight champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis. Seems message sent, message received as “Tank” responded via Twitter “I’ll be waiting on that call.”
As for Martinez this is his tenth loss, and it seems retirement is in order.
