Despite what Top Rank states, Tyson Fury still claims the rematch will happen on February 22!
In many ways, boxing can be one confusing and contradictory sport. At the moment, that is exactly the situation that we have with Tyson “The Gypsy King” Fury (28-0-1, 20 KO’s).
Fury recently made headlines by announcing that he officially signed a fresh contract to rematch WBC heavyweight champion Deontay “The Bronze Bomber” Wilder (41-0-1, 40 KO’s) on February 22.
Before they can have the opportunity to collide, both men have tasks to accomplish. Wilder has a September 28 dance date with Luis “King Kong” Ortiz, while Fury has an October fight against an unnamed foe. Provided that each are victorious, they would then meet in the first quarter of 2020.
FURY STANDS BY THE DATE
Well, that is what Fury went to the media with!
Quickly after the Gypsy King supplied this information, his own Top Rank promotional company publicly denied the claim. The longstanding organization insisted that no such paper work had been signed and an actually fight date was yet to be determined. For those who crave a definite conclusion to the Wilder v Fury rival, this was sour news.
It would appear that Fury didn’t care for being contradicted. In an exclusive interview with Dom McGuinness, from talkSPORT, the fleet-footed heavyweight delved back into the issue. When directly asked about the February 22 date, Fury stated:
“If I’ve signed a contract, I’ve signed a contract and that’s it. 100 percent [it’s happening] He’s signed a contract and I’ve signed a contract.
“I’ve got an October date which has not been announced yet officially. Then I’ve got the Wilder rematch and that’s it really. Just enjoying life day by day.”
A HISTORY OF CONFUSION
The current confusion surrounding the anticipated rematch, at this point, seems all too appropriate. Fury and Wilder, initially, were going to stage an immediate rematch. That was until the Gypsy King abandoned those plans in order to set up shop with Top Rank and ESPN.
Later, when Wilder announced he had signed on to rematch Luis Ortiz first, then Fury, the latter denied this was case. Now that Fury is stating there is a rematch in play with Wilder, it’s his own promotional company who are denying the claim.
The whole situation is coming across as needlessly complicated.
