Ryan Garcia’s Career is in a Freefall Following Romero Loss
“King” Ryan Garcia (24-2, 20 KOs) was exposed once and for all. The 26-year-old looked listless during a unanimous decision loss to one-time WBA junior welterweight champion Rolando “Rolly” Romero (17-2, 13 KOs) on May 3 in New York City. Afterward, Garcia was visibly emotional and tried to throw some of the blame on his performance towards his trainer, Derrick James. Many boxing fans were having none of the blame game.
This is gut-check time for Garcia. So far, he’s been more style than substance. We’re talking about a fighter who receives more attention for what he posts on social media than anything legitimate in a boxing ring.
The 26-year-old never exhibited the mindset and qualities of a championship-level fighter. Garcia’s career has hit a crossroads. A question remains whether he can recover from this setback against Romero.
