Sanchez v Pina

On the undercard of Navarrete v Lopez, up and coming featherweight Sergio Alfredo Sanchez (15-1, 9 KO’s) emphatically snapped Gustavo Pina’s (8-3, 5 KO’s) seven-fight win streak with a single brutal left uppercut. To begin the bout, Sanchez fell more into the role of a counter puncher as Pina was happy to press the action. Each man landed well and appeared comfortable up until Sanchez suddenly put Pina down with a stunning left hook.

Pina easily beat the count and seemed to be cleared eyed when the action resumed. After having placed Pina on the canvas, Sanchez was a hair more aggressive at the outset of the second round but settled back into his counter punching ways by the end of the period. Yet, throughout the round, Sanchez consistently scored with his two-fisted attack.

The fight abruptly ended in the first ten seconds when Sanchez crushed Pina with a picture-perfect left uppercut. The sole blow laid Pina out flat on his back and prompted the immediate halt of the prizefight. After remaining on the floor for several minutes, Gustavo Pina made it to his feet without showing any other detrimental effects of the thunderous shot.

Ornelas v Palomares

Over the course of five grueling rounds, featherweight Edwin “Pupo” Palomares (13-3-1, 4 KO’s) was able to break down Carlos “Chinito” Ornelas (25-3, 14 KO’s) and claim a stoppage victory. Right from the start, the fight turned into a high volume phone booth themed war. Neither man was very big on defense and each quickly returned fire when hit.

The prizefight was generally a stalemate until Palomares switched into a higher gear during the third period. After increasing the intensity of his attack, Ornelas was never able to quite catch up again. To make the situation even a bit more dire, Pupo was throwing near constant shots that constantly pelted Ornelas’s arms, body and head.

Palomares continued being the ring general right up until he overwhelmed and put Ornelas on the canvas with a volley of blows punctuated by a final glancing body blow. Despite making it to his exhausted feet, the bout was stopped when Ornelas’ own corner threw in the towel. This was a great one for Edwin Palomores, who actually came into the fight off a loss. The bout will mark Carlos Ornelas’ third loss, all of which have been by stoppage.
