Billy Joe Saunders will fight Canelo Alvarez, ring issue resolved

The week of the mega-showdown fight between unified super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvares (55-1-2, 37ko) and WBO champion “Superb” Billy Joe Saunders (30-0, 14ko) almost had the fight get cancelled. Tom Saunders, the father of the WBO champion, told IFL TV the fight was off because the size of the ring was an issue.

With May 8 just days away, this news immediately hit social media like a ton of bricks. Everyone has been gearing up for the bout this Cinco de Mayo weekend at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. It seems team Saunders wanted the ring size to be twenty-four feet. This size is more suitable for boxers that are good movers like the WBO champion. Furthermore, they were willing to settle for a twenty-two-foot ring. If their demands were not satisfied, they were ready to walk away from the fight and get on the first thing smoking back to England.

Well, it seems that cooler heads have prevailed. Saunders took to social media to let the fans know they can sleep easy at night. The fight is a go and the issue with the ring has been resolved.

“I just want to say I am pleased the issue is sorted. Because obviously as you can see, I tagged Eddie Hearn and Canelo in the last video and the ring is not a problem. Thumbs are up. “

Saunders clearly in better spirits, ended the live video with a message for DAZN/Matchroom Boxing British promoter Eddie Hearn.

“Eddie, get the ring in, mate!”
