Floyd Schofield Questionably Skips Mason Fight for More Money
In a recent social media post, chief second and father to lightweight contender Floyd “Kid Austin” Schofield (18-0, 12 KO’s), Floyd Schofield Sr, defended his team’s actions. The video was made in response to claims that his son just ducked fellow rising 135-pound star Abdullah Mason. In the response, he scapegoats Golden Boy.
Schofield Sr. openly admits that Team Mason did approach his son with a $1 million fight offer. According to Senior, the prizefight with Mason was skirted because Kid Austin was offered a 5-year contract with their current Golden Boy Promotions promoters worth $5 million.
“I figured I’d address the comments and the news that’s out there – the bull crap about Kid and Mason fight. Number one, yes, we want to fight Mason and, yes, we will fight Mason according to Golden Boy and them, but Golden Boy had bigger plans. So, yes, Mason offered us a million dollars, or their team over there offered us a million dollars for us to fight. But Golden Boy offered us a five-year deal for five million. Guaranteed five-years employment, guaranteed we going to be fighting for a title soon. What would you pick?”
SCARED MONEY DON’T MAKE NONE
As tariffs continue to plug the nation into peril and uncertainty, it may be hard to turn down five million in cold, hard cash. At the same time though, provided that Kid Austin won, wouldn’t a million dollars essentially be his new minimum at the negotiating table, especially after knocking off such a blue-chip prospect like Mason? Schofield has fought no less than 10 fights since 2021.
Even if you generously argue he would only top out at $750K after theoretically besting Mason, he would have already made north of $5 million in less than 5 years. No matter how you slice it, it appears that Team Schofield left a sizable amount of money on the table. At least if they plan on keep winning!
HIGH STAKES GAMBLING
This appears to be a poor financial decision. Furthermore, it displays an apparent lack of confidence that Schofield could overcome Mason in the ring. Perhaps Golden Boy shares in this lack in resolve that Kid Austin has the stuff to get the job done. Otherwise, why couldn’t Schofield get his contract and face Mason as the first opponent out the gate?
Instead, we are forced to wait on a mystery adversary to be announced. Without question, Team Schofield will be under high scrutiny in regard to who this next opponent is. Let’s just hope it’s worth the wait. Seemingly taking short money to face a lesser foe would be a bad look, to say the least!
“Our next opponent in June is a good one! This is a test. I can’t say who it is, but this is a good fight right here. So we hope you tune in, in June!”
