Claressa Shields: “The Only TV promotion That Doesn’t Have a Woman Fighter is PBC!”
Within the current landscape of women’s boxing, there is no way to say that unified middleweight champion Claressa “T-Rex” Shields is not one of the sport’s most prominent figures. Since her amateur days, when she captured two gold medals, she became a staple in the boxing press.
As a professional, T-Rex remained in the spotlight as she gobbled up belts and ping-ponged around a number of weight divisions and television networks. Yet, even though many describe her as self-centered, she has often gone out of her way to shine a light on various female boxers, their accomplishments and women’s boxing in general.
It’s a well-known fact that Shields and former WBC world super middleweight champion Franchon Crews Dezurn (6-1, 2 KO’s) are great friends. Also, T-Rex regularly showers undisputed world lightweight champion Katie Taylor (15-0, 6 KO’s) in praise.
PBC NEEDS SOME FEMALE FIGHTERS
Fueled with this brand of empathy, Shields would love to see all the women in boxing get better treatment. She would also like to see women’s boxing represented at a higher rate and on all platforms. One rogue faction that she has her eyes on specifically is the PBC. In an exclusive interview with Fight Hype, she explained how the PBC was in dereliction of duty due to not having any females on their roster.
“I fought the main event a handful of times on Showtime, I fought the co-main event on DAZN already. I fought the co-main event on HBO. Now I’m just trying to figure out a way how I can get PBC to get a woman on the card.
“Of course I want it to be myself, but I need them to at least start backing women fighters because they’re the only promotion that’s not right now. The only TV promotion that doesn’t have a woman fighter is PBC.
“Everyone else is getting along pretty well.”
With this fact so plainly spelled out, it’s almost surprising that PBC does not have a female in their stable. And this is simply because the PBC reserve of boxers is so staggeringly large, it would seem that a female would have made it in almost by accident by this point. It’ll be interesting to see if PBC either responds to this, acquires a few female fighters or continues on with business as usual.
