Claressa Shields Comments on Hanna Gabriels Failing a Drug Test
Unfortunately, the June 3 headline bout between undisputed middleweight champion Claressa “T-Rex” Shields (13-0, 2 KO’S) and Hanna Gabriels (21-2-1. 12 KO’s) is off. The match was nixed when it was discovered that Gabriels failed a VADA drug test. As a result, Shields will now test her might against Maricela “La Diva” Cornejo (16-5, 6 KO’s) in the feature fight. The prizefight will take place in the Little Caesars Arena located in Detroit, Michigan.
Shields is not happy with the soggy turn of events. Yet, its obvious that Shields, 28, is not losing any sleep over the matter. To bolster this fact, T-Rex took to her social media to vent her thoughts on the matter.
“I’m not going to jump to conclusions and all that, I just know that I didn’t have nothing in my system, she did. The change of opponent don’t matter; new opponent, same goal . . . this is still a great fight and I plan to go out there and do what I do best!”
FROM 100 TO 0 REAL QUICK!
Roughly six years ago, Shields and Gabriels went head-to-head in a very memorable action-packed war. The match was especially significant because it was both, the first time that women headlined a main event on Showtime Boxing and the first time that T-Rex touched the canvas. Yet, after finding her feet after being dropped in the first, Shields would rally and dominate en route to a fairly wide unanimous decision victory.
Naturally, Gabriels has demanded a rematch ever since, feeling that she received a raw deal in the outcome. At the moment though, it is unclear what will happen in regards to Gabriels’ immediate and near future. Now that the premiere headline bout has bitten the dust, 3Kings Boxing will keep you abreast of any new developments with Claressa Shields versus Maricela Cornejo.
