Skye Nicolson Gets Perfect Scorecards Over Dyana Vargas
In the first defense of her title, WBC featherweight champion Skye Nicolson (11-0, 1 KO) defeated Dyana “La Maquina” Vargas (19-2, 12 KO) by an easy unanimous decision.
Right from the start of the match, it was clear that Nicolson’s nifty footwork would be a nightmare for La Maquina. While constantly moving and turning, the champ routinely popped the Dominican in the face with stiff jabs. In response, Vargas plodded around in pursuit mugging like a henchman and throwing near-exclusive hard shots that often missed by a mile.
By the fourth round, the champ fought with her hands at the hips with zero consequence. Starting in the fifth round, Nicolson put more steam on a healthy amount of her punches. Despite the extra pop on her shots, Vargas continued pursuit and endless scowling at the Aussie with no offensive success.
Nicolson hit and moved away from Vargas so fast that she was warned to stop turning her back. Yet, she was only showing her back in a twirling attempt to locate where the champ had gone.
Given that it was a one-sided beating, it was no surprise the judges scored it 100-90 in favor of Nicolson.
