Callum Smith vs Gennady Golovkin in 2019?
According to Eddie Hearn, he has spoken to Tom Loeffler about potentially matching WBA super middleweight champion Callum Smith against former unified middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin.
Smith captured the WBA crown with a seventh round knockout victory over George Smith back in September which rounded out the WBSS finals. Golovkin, on the other hand, suffered a split decision defeat to Canelo Alvarez in their rematch.
Previously reported by3kingsboxing.com, Loeffler was closing in on a deal for Golovkin to fight on DAZN. Expectations are for that deal to close in the near future.
This potential match-up would be intriguing, especially where both men are right now in their respective careers. At 28, Smith is undefeated and riding high now that he’s a champion. He’s looking to build his name with a win over one of the biggest names in the sport!
As for Golovkin, this would give him an opportunity to become a two-division world champion. If this fight gets made, not only would the WBA title be at stake, but also the lineal super middleweight title.
Fans should also note that if Golovkin defeats Smith and Canelo defeats Fielding December 15, a third fight is on the horizon at super middleweight. Golovkin would be the WBA super champion and Canelo would be his mandatory as the WBA regular champion!
3kingsboxing.comwill continue to monitor the situation and provide any updates as they become available.
