Errol Spence Wants to See Rolando Romero Face Frank Martin Next!
In his last in-ring tour of duty, rising lightweight fighter Frank “The Ghost” Martin (16-0, 12 KO’s) scored an impressive tenth round knockout. For that prizefight, his opponent was Dominican boxer Jackson Marinez. Admittedly, Marinez is on the downslide with his defeat at the hands of Martin being his third consecutive loss. Despite the lackluster nature of his current resume, the win was still a good one for The Ghost.
With Marinez out the way, now the question once again becomes: ‘who’s next?’ Trained by the well-respected Derrick James, who also trains WBA Super, IBF and WBC welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr and undisputed super welterweight champion Jermell Charlo, the PBC-pushed fighter is definitely in good hands. Even better, The Ghost is ranked #14 (WBA).
FIGHT MY GUY, THEN!
When asked his opinion on the matter, his promoter, the aforementioned Errol Spence Jr, laid his hand bare. For his money, he’d love to see Martin and Rolando “Rolly” Romero (14-1, 12 KO’s) trade leather for pay in their next assignment. In fact, the welterweight champion highlighted Rolly and Martin’s now common opponent in Marinez.
“I think he looked very great, he stopped him like he was supposed to do in impressive fashion – something that Rolly didn’t do. And I don’t even think that is a logical question, ‘is he ready for Rolly,’ because I don’t think you can name an opponent that Rolly has beat. I mean he only fought Tank, so I definitely think that he is ready for Rolly.
He’ll definitely beat Rolly and he’s just a better fighter than Rolly overall. So, that’s a fight that I think can definitely happen – especially with Rolly coming off a loss and he need a fight to get back in the mix. So, why not fight Frank Martin?”
While it was a loss, Romero is coming off the biggest fight of his life versus Gervonta Davis. After getting off to a wonderful start, Rolly got over anxious and attacked recklessly which led to him getting knocked out in the sixth round of their encounter. Naturally, Romero would want to return to the ring against another big name. Yet, perhaps a quality fight versus Martin may be just what the doctor ordered! Let’s see how it all plays out.
