Eimantas Stanionis v Vergil Ortiz Jr Bout Forced to Purse Bids

The hits keep coming as the WBA has issued documents concerning a purse bid to WBA ‘regular’ welterweight champion Eimantas Stanionis (14-0, 9KO) and top contender Vergil Ortiz (19-0, 19KO).

3Kings Boxing predicted this fight to have a high likelihood of being ordered. Thus, it was no surprise when the WBA pulled the trigger and ordered negotiations on November 18.

It seems no agreement was reached before the deadline, forcing the organization to order a purse bid on December 12. Per the sanctioning body’s rules, the minimum amount needed to obtain the rights to host the fight is $200,000. In addition, the champion will get the lion’s share of the split of 75%, and 25% will go to the challenger.

Providing the fight takes place, the winner is guaranteed a shot at the winner between unified champion Errol “The Truth” Spence and former unified champion Keith Thurman. Both teams still have plenty of time to come to some kind of an agreement before the purse bid takes place on the scheduled date. Ortiz Jr is ranked within the top three of all four major sanctioning bodies.

ORTIZ HAS MADE A STRONG RETURN

In 2021, Ortiz had to be rushed to the hospital after suffering a health scare from a condition called rhabdomyolysis. It prevented the power-puncher from competing for almost a year.

On October 6, Ortiz Jr returned to the ring with a vengeance by demolishing contender Michael McKinson via ninth-round stoppage. Furthermore, The Texan quickly declared himself back and ready for a world title shot.

STANIONIS GETS A TITLE AND REVENGE

After stepping aside to allow former WBA Super champion Yordenis Ugas to unify with Spence, Stanionis was able to get redemption by grabbing the secondary title and avenged his amateur defeats against Radzhab Butaev in April.

Both combatants are chomping at the heels of a title shot. It will be interesting to see how things play out.

3Kings Boxing will continue to monitor this situation and provide any further updates.
