Eimantas Stanionis vs Vergil Ortiz Jr New Targeting July 8

Will the third try to be the charm for a fight between WBA Regular welterweight champion Eimantas Stanionis (14-0, 9KO) and mandatory challenger Vergil Ortiz Jr (19-0, 19KO)? According to Fight Freaks Unite, Golden Boy Promotions executive Eric Gomez claims the newly scheduled date is July 8 and that Ortiz has once again recovered from rhabdomyolysis.

Golden Boy won the WBA ordered purse bid in November 2022. Ever since, it has been a difficult task getting these fighters in the ring. The original plan was for them to fight on March 18, but that got scrapped when Stanionis had to have emergency appendectomy surgery.

The fight was rescheduled for April 29 until Ortiz fell victim to his rhabdomyolysis, which releases proteins and electrolytes into the bloodstream from damaged muscle tissue. Ortiz was first hindered by this condition in the build-up to a fight against Michael Mckinson in 2022.

THIS SHOULD BE THE LAST STRAW

Hopefully, these two warriors can stay healthy and the fight happens without any more interruptions. The WBA has been very understanding when it comes to this situation. This needs to be the last postponement. Otherwise, the organization needs to look at scrapping the fight and ordering someone else in their rankings to step in.

Both fighters have been out of the ring since 2022. Ortiz was last seen stopping McKinson in August. Stanionis won the Regular title with a narrow-split decision victory over Radzhab Butaev in April.

As of the writing of this article, a location to host the fight has not been named.
