Shakur Stevenson vs Lamont Roach Could Be Next
WBC lightweight champion Shakur “Fearless” Stevenson (23-0, 11KO) and WBA junior lightweight champion Lamont “The Reaper” Roach (25-1-1, 10KO) should fight next.
The Reaper continues to be the talk of the boxing world after getting robbed against WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis. A blunder by referee Steve Willis for not counting a knockdown, which cost Roach a victory.
Roach not only went the distance in an impressive performance, but he also hurt Davis a few times. In the in-ring post-fight interview, both fighters talked about doing a rematch. Davis had a change of mind and informed the media at the post-fight press conference.
THE CHAMP WANTS NEXT
With the rematch off the table, what’s next? This is where Fearless came into play. He took to social media, offering Roach a chance at the WBC title.
Undoubtedly Roach would rather rematch Davis. However, he had no problem accepting Stevenson’s open invitation.
“Genuinely speaking that’s what I want to do. I want to fight the best fights. Hopefully we can get the rematch. If not, more than likely we can get in there with Shakur.” – Lamont Roach
Roach’s stock is at an all-time high, and after that performance, a fight with Stevenson would generate tremendous buzz. In addition, the fighters are playing it smart by looking to fight hopefully sometime this year.
WHY THE FIGHT MAKES SENSE
Stevenson is coming off a knockout victory over replacement fighter Josh Padley. The WBC champion would put tremendous pressure on Davis to fight him with an impressive win over Roach.
It’s worth mentioning that Roach has other options, like fighting the division’s other champions, O’Shaquie Foster and Emanuel Navarrete. However, a fight with Stevenson brings more attention and increases his value, especially if he were to win.
Right now is the perfect time to capitalize off this new-found fame, and Stevenson versus Roach could be a financial hit.
