Sulaiman Is In No Rush To Make Canelo vs Benavidez!
It’s no secret that two-time WBC super middleweight champion “The Mexican Monster” David Benavidez (27-0, 23 KO’s) wants another shot at the title. More specifically, he would like a shot at undisputed champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (59-2-2, 39 KO’s). In fact, he has been pining for his shot since Canelo entered the division roughly three years ago. Even more frustrating, Benavidez has remained his mandatory challenger for a few years. Yet, even with this being the case neither Alvarez, nor WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman, appear overly concerned about putting this match together.
In a recent interview with Broadway Joel, Sulaiman briefly touched on the topic:
“Benavidez defeated Plant in March of this year, so his date for mandatory position is March 2024…they can fight any time [if the two sides want to].”

THE WAIT GOES ON
As consistently as The Mexican Monster has called for a duel with Canelo, the undisputed champion has vetoed it as a viable option. As pressure from the fans and media has increased, Alvarez has admitted that it’s worth considering and even said that it’s a fight worth taking. Past this lip service, however, there has been zero indication that Team Alvarez is even remotely interested in this bout.
When the redhead does slide through the ropes to compete next, he will do so against undisputed super welterweight champion Jermell Charlo. The two will collide later this year on an as yet undisclosed fight date.
For his part, Benavidez just picked up a career best win over divisional rival Caleb Plant this past April. At this point in time, The Mexican Monster is still looking for an opponent. As far as that goes, the only thing we know for a fact is that his next in-ring foe will not be Canelo Alvarez! Nevertheless, stay tuned to 3Kings Boxing for all the latest news on Canelo, Benavidez and everything boxing related.
