Zaurbek Could Face Roach Or Target Vacant IBF Title
In what was an entertaining battle, unbeaten junior lightweight Sultan Zaurbek (20-0, 13 KOs) could target a fight with WBA champion Lamont Roach Jr (25-1-2, 10KO).
Zaurbek scored a unanimous decision (97-93, 97-93, 96-94) victory over South Africa’s Azinga Fuzile in front of an enthusiastic crowd at Barys Arena in Astana, Kazakhstan. A world title shot next should be a top priority.
Fuzile gave a spirited effort during the early rounds. However, Zaurbek’s power, physical strength, and toughness took over. Fighting in front of his home area fans, the Kazakhstani dominated the last half of the contest.
Ranked second by the WBA and fifth by the IBF, Zaurbek could fight Roach, who is expected to engage in a rematch with WBA lightweight champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis. Team Zaurbek has strongly hinted that Roach is their number one option. The other option for Zaurbek is to position himself to fight for the IBF belt, which is currently vacant.
Whatever route he goes, the 28-year-old showed that he’s ready to give anyone a serious test at 130 pounds. Zaurbek is more than ready for his shot, and hopefully, it will occur by the end of this year.
