Sunny Edwards Hopeful for Bam Rodriguez Unification After Matchroom Signing
IBF flyweight champion “Showtime” Sunny Edwards (18-0, 4KO) is ready to face former WBC super flyweight champion Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez (17-0, 11KO). Furthermore, he could be fighting Rodriguez in a major unification for the WBO title, providing things go according to plan.
Ranked #1 by the WBO, Rodriguez will fight for the vacant title against #2 ranked contender Cristian Gonzalez on April 8. Bam is coming down from the super flyweight division, where he picked up the WBC title after defeating Carlos Cuadras in 2022.
EDWARDS BENEFITS FROM SIGNING WITH MATCHROOM BOXING
On March 31, Showtime hit the social media news cycle after leaving Probellum to sign with Matchroom Boxing, wanting a unification. Before signing with the British promotional company, Edwards was always on the hunt for WBC champion Julio Cesar Martinez.
In 2022, Showtime called for a fight with Rodriguez when rumors were going around that the Texan was heading back down to flyweight. Fast forward to now, and the IBF champion could see the fight become a reality.
BREAKING DOWN EACH FIGHTER’S STYLE
In this author’s opinion, a fight with Rodriguez is a much tougher match-up for Edwards. Bam is a well-schooled boxer with power in that straight left hand, and fights well behind the jab. His footwork, hand speed, and punch variation have made him an exciting, fan-friendly fighter. Moreover, his ability to fight in the pocket while using the angles is fun to watch.
Edwards is a pure boxer that knows how to keep a fight at mid-range distance. His ability to switch from offense to defense using superb footwork has seen opponents swinging at the air. Showtime’s counterpunching, reflexes, and ring IQ play a big role in his undefeated record.
With so much on the line, fans can expect Rodriguez to bring his A-game against Gonzalez.
