Davis and Mayweather’s Relationship Is Permanently Damaged
Boxing is full of stories where the closest of partnerships can result in folks being outright enemies. That appears to be the case for reigning WBA lightweight champion Abdul “Tank” Wahid (29-0, 27 KOs), formerly Gervonta Davis, and Hall of Fame Inductee Floyd “Money” Mayweather.
On his social media page, Mayweather went on a tirade about the present state of the sport. In his mind, the priorities of modern-day fighters are off-kilter, and they are more worried about the bottom line than putting in the sacrifices it takes to be a great fighter.
Wahid took Money’s rant as an indirect shot toward him and fired back on social media. Which has evolved into a series of back-and-forth insults between the two gentlemen.
Mayweather wasn’t going to take those comments laying down and quickly hit back at his former protege.
NO LONGER FRIENDS
Mayweather was the former promoter of Wahid. With them, it was more than a business partnership, as he viewed himself as a mentor to Tank in and out of the ring.
But over time, it was becoming clear that there were cracks in their relationship. In December 2022, Tank announced he would run his show and self-promote his career.
But Mayweather still cared about Tank’s future. He was in attendance for Wahid’s seventh-round stoppage over Ryan Garcia in April 2023. Money could be seen cheering and yelling advice to the WBA champion during that contest.
Wahid has called himself the face of boxing. If that’s the case, he has Mayweather to thank for that. Together, the Mayweather and Tank team became a powerhouse in the sport. However, the latest series of social media sparring is a sign that things are permanently damaged.
