Josh Taylor returns fire to both Teofimo Lopez and his father
The fight between undisputed junior welterweight champion Josh “The Tartan Tornado” Taylor (18-0, 13ko) and WBO mandatory challenger Jack “El Gato” Catterall (26-0,13ko) got moved to a later date. Notwithstanding, he is still standing his ground on unified lightweight champion “The Takeover” Teofimo Lopez Jr not being a true undisputed champion.
CHASING JOSH TAYLOR
It all started when Taylor responded to Lopez’s desire to fight him in an undisputed vs undisputed match-up. Being a true undisputed champion, Taylor took exception to that statement.
“He (Lopez) has to take care of some business at lightweight first. He’s got to take care of what he is doing and actually become an undisputed champion at lightweight, first.”
Lopez Jr felt some kind of way upon hearing this and had some things to say of his own.
“Why are you so scared, Josh? Come on my man, come on. My God, you can’t be that scared.”
Now that narrative of Taylor being scared is something that team Lopez has been pushing for a while. Matter of fact, Lopez’s father/trainer, Lopez Sr revealed that Top Rank boss Bob Arum promised them a fight with Taylor in April 2022.
“We’re going to 140 now, and we are chasing Josh Taylor right now. That’s the guy that we want….Of course, it’s going to be made. I already spoke with Bob! Bob promised me we will fight him (Taylor) in April. That’s if he doesn’t chicken out and go to 147.”
That last statement is worth paying very close attention to. Why? Because Taylor has already made it clear that WBO welterweight champion Terence Crawford is his next target.
THE REAL UNDISPUTED CHAMPION CLAPPED BACK HARD
During an interview with iFL TV, the undisputed champion went hard at team Lopez, and he doubled down on moving up to welterweight.
“He is a fucking clown, isn’t he? He’s an absolute clown.”
“Daddy does all the talking. He (Lopez Sr) is a bigger punk than Teofimo (Lopez Jr). They both are absolute morons man…Why would I be scared to fight him? If a fight does happen, I would happily slap him and bring him back down to the Earth for a bang.”
“Right now, he’s not on my radar. I’ve got other things I am thinking about that I’m doing. I want to become a two-weight world champion myself. I want to move up to 147 fight Crawford and Spence.”
Josh Taylor also said how he would have reacted to The Takeover and his father had they walked up to him like they did in the viral Haney altercation.
“I would definitely bitch slap him!”
The whole undisputed argument was brought back up, and he doubled down on his original statement that started the back and forth.
“It’s a fact he is not undisputed. The WBC belt belongs to Devin Haney. He’s got the belt. So how can you have three of the belts, and have a franchise belt, and call yourself undisputed champion when you haven’t fought for the undisputed title?”
