Will we see Katie Taylor vs Amanda Serrano in 2020?

To serious followers of women’s boxing, a bout between undisputed lightweight champion Katie Taylor (14-0, 6KO) and seven division champion Amanda Serrano (37-1-1, 27KO) is the best and biggest fight that could be made right now.

Both are unequivocally two of the top five fighters in women’s boxing. Talk of a showdown between the two has been bantered about throughout 2019.

The question is when will a Taylor – Serrano showdown happen, if it happens?

Both ladies bring a unique skill-set to the table. On paper their styles would look to make a great fight; possibly a fight of the year candidate in both men and women’s boxing.

On October 12 during the Jessica McCaskill’s post-fight press conference following her win over Erica Farias, Matchroom Promotions Eddie Hearn (who promotes both Taylor and co-promotes Serrano) was asked about the women’s mega fight.

Hearn gave a very interesting take.

“She [Amanda Serrano] has a contract to fight Katie Taylor, but every time she signs a contract to fight Katie Taylor she says well if the money’s right I’ll fight her.

“It’s very confusing, really. I know her and Lou DiBella (co-promoter of Serrano) are going backwards and forwards, but as far as I’m concerned, that’s a really big fight, but Katie’s got (Christina) Linardatou on November 2nd and I’ll think she will fight Serrano next.”

The 33-year old Irish fighter will be seeking to become a two-division champion when she faces Linardatou who is the current world WBO Super-Lightweight champion.

After Serrano’s last fight, a decision win over Heather Hardy to win the Featherweight titles on September 13, she was asked about a fight against Taylor. Serrano mentioned the undisputed champ’s upcoming bout against Linardatou and suggested Taylor doesn’t want to fight her.

When it comes to boxing, everything ultimately comes down to timing and regarding a potential mega-fight. A women’s boxing pound for pound showdown between certainly qualifies as a mega-fight.

Hearn is no fool. All parties involved know what kind of opportunity this is. At this point, it’s just a matter of folks coming to the table and ironing out a deal.

If Hearn says he thinks a fight between Taylor and Serrano will happen look for this fight to take place, probably some time in 2020.

Bottom line, there is money on the table and this mega fight has pound for pound implications that could reverberate throughout women’s boxing. This fight is too good for the sport and too good for both ladies to let pass by.

3KingsBoxing predicts the fight will ultimately take place. And when it does, we will be sure to provide details on one of the best fights that can be made not only in women’s boxing, but in boxing, period!
