Team Munguia Looking to Land Gennady Golovkin for June 10
Former WBO junior middleweight champion Jaime Munguia (41-0, 33KO) could be headed for a possible showdown with two-time unified middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (42-1, 37KO).
TEAM MUNGUIA WANTS TO FIGHT GOLOVKIN
In an interview with the Mexican newspaper Izquierdazo, Munguia’s primary promoter, Fernando Beltran of Zanfer Promotions, dropped GGG’s name as a possible opponent instead of Bivol’s for June 10.
“We are trying to get him [Munguia] to fight Gennady Golovkin on June 10. We would love it to go with Golovkin. We have been looking for him for a long time, since the beginning of his [Munguia] career. We have not been able to finalize a fight, but we continue in the fight looking for it.”
When asked about fighting the WBA champion, Beltran replied:
“We are not thinking about June 10 with him.”
Hearing Golovkin’s name is a shocker as many inside the boxing community questioned if he was going to retire after vacating the unified titles. Since losing the trilogy to undisputed super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, GGG has gone radio silent.
From a financial standpoint, this is a good fight, if they can make it happen. Both fighters have fan-friendly styles and Golovkin’s name still has some value left. Moreover, he still possesses a solid chin and punching power. Munguia’s aggressive style would provide for plenty of action.
