Vargas Retains His Title With Wide UD

 

In the co-feature bout of the Miguel Cotto/Sadam Ali card from Madison Square Garden in New York City Rey Vargas (30-0,22KO) put his WBC Jr. Featherweight belt on the line against Oscar Negrete(17-0,7KO) on HBO Championship Boxing.

Vargas started out controlling the pace from the outside hitting Negrete with a couple of body shots that seemed to hurt him while keeping the fight at middle distance. In the third and fourth Negrete was able to close the distance some but just not enough to win the rounds.

Inthe middle rounds Vargas suffered a cut on the side of his right eye. Negrete showed tremendous heart in closing the distance and tried making it a little rough but the former Olympian was able to stay sharp throughout and seemed to land his uppercut at will. By the eighth Vargas suffered another cut oformerleft side, both cuts seemed to come from headbutts.

Negrete was game and continued trying to come forward but just wasn’t enough as Vargas would close out strong in the championship rounds to retain his title by unanimous decision. The judges scorecards were 119-109, 119-109, 120-108.
