Verdejo eyeing the winner of WBO junior welterweight bout Maurice Hooker vs Alex Saucedo!
Lightweight contender Felix Verdejo (24-1,16KO) feels he’s ready for a move up in weight. Additionally, he wants a shot at a title!
The once highly-touted Puerto Rican prospect received sort of a “wake up call” after suffering his first loss to little known Antonio Torres in March. Amidst the rumors the young fighter did not take aspects of his career as serious as he should have, many felt his future looked uncertain.
Verdejo hired Memo Heredia as his strength and conditioning coach, and cut down on his now infamous party habits. As a result, he received an impressive victory over Yardley Cruz by second round knockout on November 10.
Head trainer Rickey Marquez states:
“Right now the fight of [Alex] Saucedo against [Maurice] Hooker interests us a lot. We like the possibility of fighting with the winner of that fight and we don’t want to get too far ahead. We want to continue working and when the opportunity arises, we’ll take advantage of it.”
With the relationship between Verdejo’s promoter Top Rank and the WBO, don’t be surprised if he gets an immediate shot at the title after moving up.
