Vergil Ortiz kills rumors that he’s being trained by Eddy Reynoso!
Unbeaten hard-hitting welterweight contender Vergil Ortiz (18-0, 18KOs) has been on a tear since turning pro in July 2016. The Texas native, who has been trained by Robert Garcia since making the switch from Joel Diaz in 2018, has reportedly discontinued their working relationship. Ortiz, ranked #1 in the WBO and WBC, #4 in the IBF and # 2 in the WBA, will reportedly join Eddy Reynoso in 2022. Or will he?
According to a report by ESPN.com, Ortiz has decided to jump ship and bring in Reynoso as his new head trainer. However, Ortiz has come out and stated that information was incorrect.
WHAT’S REALLY GOING ON?!
Apparently only one part of the report is true. Ortiz took to Twitter to deny the report of him joining Reynoso. He would provide a screenshot of him denying such a move had been made. However, what he didn’t do is mention whether he and Garcia had gone their separate ways.
ROBERT GARCIA SPEAKS!
The now former trainer of Ortiz has come out and broken his silence! He responded on Twitter, saying that he doesn’t know who his former pupil will be training with next, only that It wouldn’t be him.
This move, regardless of who ends up being Ortiz’s new trainer, is kind of surprising. 2021 has been the best year of Ortiz’s young career. He has picked up KO wins over former WBO junior welterweight champion Maurice Hooker and former world title challenger Egidijus Kavaliauskas.
It’s clear that Ortiz is being very coy about what’s really going on. What we know for certain is that Garcia is out as the head trainer of Ortiz. If Reynoso does indeed end up being the new trainer for Ortiz, the move indicates just how popular the Mexican trainer has become.
3kingsboxing.com will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available.
