Vergil Ortiz Jr wants Terence Crawford next!

In the toughest fight of his young career, hard-hitting Vergil Ortiz Jr (17-0, 17KOs) rose to the occasion as he turned away former WBO Junior Welterweight champion Maurice “Mighty Mo” Hooker (27-2-3, 18KOs) in seven rounds! Going into this fight, all eyes were on Ortiz Jr. Ranked number two in the WBO and number six by the WBC at welterweight, a win would put him closer to a possible showdown with WBO champion Terence Crawford (37-0, 28KOs).

In his post-fight interview, he was asked about a title shot in his next fight, as well as a possible fight with WBO Welterweight champion Terence Crawford. Crawford is currently in need of a fight. Ortiz Jr said the following about fighting for a title next:

“I’m ready for a title shot; whoever wants to give me an opportunity. I’m not going to call anyone a bum. That’s not who I am. I am just ready for the opportunity if someone wants to give it to me.”

On if he is ready for a fight with Crawford right now

“I’m looking at you Bud! I’m looking at you. I don’t care if I’m 22-years-old, I want that fight!”

After this performance, it is clear that the 22 year-old Texas native is ascending towards a title opportunity in the near future. His combination of power, speed, pressure fighting style and his killer instinct already makes him a formidable opponent, even with only seventeen bouts.

Unfortunately, in an interview with DAZN prior to this bout, Crawford balked at the idea of facing Hooker. He stated that he laughs at the idea and he is on to bigger things. Furthermore, unified champ Errol Spence seems tied up in negotiating what is really a bigger opportunity in adding a third welterweight title to his collection by facing WBA champ Yordenis Ugas.

Therefore, fans can almost guarantee another step-up match for Ortiz Jr when he returns to the ring for his next bout. The more experience he gains, the more dangerous he will be. With youth on his side, the future looks extremely bright!
