Rau’shee Warren Takes Decision Over Gilberto Mendoza
Former unified bantamweight champion Rau’shee Warren (16-3, 4KOs) hit the comeback trail after his most recent setback in 2019 against Nordine Oubaali (17-0, 12KOs). In that fight, for the vacant WBC bantamweight title, he would be on the wrong side of a unanimous decision defeat.
His comeback opponent, Gilberto Mendoza (15-7-3, 7KOs), was hoping to give the Ohio native his fourth career defeat.
WARREN COMES OUT ULTRA AGGRESSIVE!
The former champion came out guns blazing! He would start the opening round off with unrelenting pressure. Clearly the more skillful fighter, Warren walked down Mendoza administering punishing body shot after body shot! At one point in the opening round, it appeared that Warren may get his overwhelmed adversary out of there!
The pressure would continue as Warren started mixing aggression with finesse, electing to box and counter at times.
5TH ROUND BEATDOWN!
Round five was huge for Warren, as he completely controlled the fight! He punished Mendoza to the head and body and opened a cut over the left eye of Mendoza. If that wasn’t bad enough, more punishment was in store as both men stood and traded big shots! Mendoza landed a few, but nothing that got the respect of Warren.
The tempo and pace of the fight didn’t change, as Warren dominated this fight from the beginning until the end. He did everything right except get the stoppage. However, with only four knockouts in 21 career bouts, that’s not surprising – even considering his opponent was brought in as a tune-up.
At the end of ten rounds of action, Rau’shee Warren would be declared the winner by way of a unanimous decision. The scores read 100-90 and 99-89 twice.
Warren improves his record to 17-3, 4 KOs.
