Frank Warren Says the WBC is at the Mercy of Tyson Fury

WBC heavyweight champion Tyson “Gypsy King” Fury (32-0-1, 23KO) is supposedly retired again. Despite the skepticism of the boxing community, the WBC has issued a deadline date for Fury to turn over the green belt. Fury’s promoter, Frank Warren, CEO of Queensberry Promotions, believes the WBC is powerless to do anything.

The boxing community has been wondering if the WBC champion is serious about retirement this time. Fury has been adamant about being retired but refused to give up the belt. This has been the main reason fans find it hard to believe he’s retired. However, WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman revealed that Fury contacted him to confirm the retirement. Furthermore, the WBC placed a deadline date for Fury to hand over the title. But, if Fury does not turn in the title, will the WBC strip him?

IS THE WBC AT THE MERCY OF TYSON FURY?

During an interview with iFL TV, Warren fired back by explaining why the WBC can’t take the belt if Fury goes past the deadline date.

“The fact is his mandatory is not due for another year. He hasn’t gotten a mandatory due […] if he doesn’t want to vacate the title, there’s no way anyone is going to take that belt off him because they can’t take it off him.”

Warren doubled down when asked if he would lobby for Fury to keep the belt when the WBC asks for it back after the deadline.

“There’s nothing to lobby. They cannot take that belt off him. Unless he wants to vacate or if he does something that’s detrimental to boxing, and he hasn’t done that, and I’m sure they’ll support him.”

The harsh reality is Warren’s absolutely correct. The WBC is at Fury’s mercy in this situation. It will be interesting to see how things play out as the boxing community can only mark the deadline date of August 26 on the calendar and wait to see what happens.
