Jermall Charlo Calls For Peace With Caleb Plant

In what has become an interesting case study, WBC middleweight champion Jermall “Hit Man” Charlo (33-0, 22 KO’s) continues to throw curveballs to the fans and public. Once one of hottest fighters in the sport, inactivity, lack of visibility and humdrum performances have essentially turned him into a 6’1 breathing afterthought. Some may even question his heart given his recent plea of peace to former super middleweight champion Caleb “Sweethands” Plant (22-2, 13 KO’s) who famously slapped him in the face.

Even still, Hit Man recently publicly stated that he had an upcoming September fight with undisputed super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Oddly enough, later in the same stream of conversation, Charlo expressed his persistent desire to hang up the gloves.

“You got to enjoy this shit and I am not enjoying this no more. If you don’t love this, then it’s not for you. I’m debating on it, I’m debating on if I want to get out the way . . . I did enough, I made history, I did all that shit already. I don’t have anything to prove to anybody. I’m just over it.”

HAT-HOLDING AND FLOORBOARD STARING

If Charlo is providing quotes like this, it almost sounds like he should retire. Since rising to prominence in the sport, he has currently become all but irrelevant outside of playing keep away with the WBC title. At the moment, Hit Man has only fought one time in the past two years and only defended the title twice in the past three years.

Even worse, his last outing versus Jose Benavidez Jr., was humdrum at best. That, combined with first getting rapped in the face by Plant and now seemingly waving the white flag, has got to be troubling for his remaining fanbase.

“Caleb Plant, what’s up fool? I ain’t mad at you dog, you got your lick back. I was pulling on your beard, that’s my fault, bro! It’s cool, you know. I just want to get out the way!”

Given the wide disparity between talking up a career-high fight while simultaneously talking about really wanting to walk away is baffling. It also will not fill fans with confidence, if a duel between Charlo and Canelo is actually contracted. So stay tuned to 3Kings Boxing for all the what’s and why’s of today’s boxing news.
