WBC Orders Devin Haney vs Javier Fortuna!
For everyone looking forward to seeing WBC lightweight champion Devin Haney take a significant step-up in competition, the wait is seemingly over. 3kingsboxing.com has learned that the WBC has ordered Haney to defend his newly acquired belt against former WBA junior lightweight champion Javier Fortuna (35-2-1 24KOs).
Fortuna, age 31, is coming off a second round TKO victory over Jesus Cuellar on November 2. The victory earned him the vacant WBC Continental Americas lightweight title. Haney (24-0, 15KOs) meanwhile pitched a shutout over the previously unbeaten Alfredo Santiago (12-1, 4KOs).
The Dominican has a wealth of experience entering this match-up. He has shared the ring with former champions Robert Easter Jr and Jason Sosa. Not only does Fortuna have the experience advantage, he also has the power advantage.
Haney, the more youthful and technically skilled fighter, has been eager to step up his competition. He has repeatedly called out Vasyl Lomachenko, Gervonta Davis and fellow prospect Ryan Garcia. While Fortuna isn’t either one of those guys, he’s still a former champion and a tremendous test for the fighter they call “The Dream”.
A purse bid has been set for December 13 in the event that both sides can’t reach an agreement.
