Oscar Collazo On The Verge Of Title Shot Against Melvin Jerusalem
3KingsBoxing.com has learned WBO minimumweight champion Melvin Jerusalem (20-2, 11 KOs) has been ordered to face mandatory challenger Oscar Collazo (6-0, 4 KOs). In an email sent to both parties by the WBO, they state that Team Jerusalem and Team Collazo have fifteen days to reach a deal. If not, the bout will go to a purse bid.
Jerusalem is currently the only reigning world champion from the Philippines. He captured the title with a surprising second-round stoppage of Masataki Taniguchi on January 6. Collazo is coming off an impressive fifth-round knockout of Yudel Reyes on January 28 in a title eliminator.
TAKING DIFFERENT PATHS
What you would have in Jerusalem vs Collazo is a match-up of the grizzled veteran versus a challenger on the fast track. The defending champion has had his share of setbacks, including losing back-to-back fights in 2017. Regardless, through perseverance and determination, the Filipino has clawed his way to the top.
Observers of the lower-weight divisions view Collazo as a budding star. He’s been moved aggressively by co-promoters Miguel Cotto and Golden Boy. They believe the resident of Puerto Rico is a future world champion.
Stay tuned to 3kingsboxing.com for more detail when this match-up is finalized and announced.
