Leo Santa Cruz Is Invited To Fight In Nottingham By Leigh Wood!

On March 12, WBA Regular featherweight champion Leigh “Leigh-thal” Wood (26-2, 16KOs) scored a sensational one-punch knockout win over previously unbeaten Michael “Mick” Conlan (16-1, 8KOs). In what turned out to be an absolute war of a fight, Wood snatched victory from the jaws of defeat, icing Conlan cold in the twelfth and final round.

There was much jubilation in the aftermath of his dramatic win. Wood would then put WBA Super featherweight champion Leo Santa Cruz (38-2-1, 19KOs) on notice!

Wood revealed this to Behind The Gloves, saying the following when asked about Santa Cruz:

GET YOUR PASSPORT READY!

“I hope he’s got his passport ready because the city’s grounds are next! He’s perfect for the job. We’ve got a lot of stick about this belt, so I’m sure me and him can sort it out at the city ground in Nottingham. “

Prior to the Wood-Conlan fight, Santa Cruz was asked who he thought would win and he picked Conlan. Obviously, those words have stuck with Wood, who now wants to lock horns with the multi-weight world champion for the Super WBA 126-pound title.

Santa Cruz recently returned to the ring for the first time since being brutally stopped by Gervonta “Tank” Davis in October of 2020. He defeated Keenan Carbajal by a unanimous decision. It’s also worth noting that Santa Cruz has recently expressed interest in unifying with newly crowned WBC featherweight champion Mark Magsayo. So, while Wood may want Santa Cruz, the feelings may not be mutual.

Regardless of who’s next for Wood, the win over Conlan has him sitting in a pretty nice position. Moving forward, a lack of marquee fights shouldn’t be an issue.
