Abdullah Mason Grinds Out UD Over A Game Sam Noakes

In his biggest test to date, Cleveland native Abdullah Mason (20-017 KO’s) bested UK fighter Sam Noakes by way of unanimous decision. With the win, Mason gobbled up the vacant WBO lightweight title in the spoils of war. The hard-fought battle was his fourth of the year and the only one that heard the final bell.

Now that Mason, 21, has the WBO strap, he is officially swimming with the big sharks of the division. To his left and right, his standing fellow champions are Raymond Muratalla (IBF), Shakur Stevenson (WBC) and Gervonta Davis (WBA). Given the experience of the other title holders, it will be interesting to see who Team Mason targets for their next duel.

Watching the scrap with Noakes, it was evident that Mason still has some holes to plug in his defense and how to more strategically economize the ring space. Provided that he hops in the ring to unify, then it’s clear that he and his handlers are committed to keeping the pedal to metal. However, it would not be surprising, and really rather prudent, to see Mason take on someone less than a champion to continue workshopping his craft.
