Abdullah Mason Still Hunting Floyd “Kid Austin” Schofield
In his last tour of duty, talented lightweight boxer Floyd “Kid Austin” Schofield (17-0, 12 KO’s) dominated in a rough and ugly brawl with Esteuri Suero. After weathering a series of fouls however, Suero was eventually disqualified and Schofield walked away with the win. Wasting no time, fellow 135-pound bruiser Abdullah Mason (12-0, 10 KO’s) hopped on his social media and called out Kid Austin.
POP QUIZ TIME!
This is not the first time that Mason has publicly expressed his desire to test his might against Schofield. As Kid Austin was chasing a bout with WBC lightweight champion “Fearless” Shakur Stevenson, Stevenson threw Mason’s name in the mix. Fearless promised that if Schofield could topple Mason, he would definitely face him next. For his part, Mason was ready for all the smoke.
If Schofield took Mason up on his offer this time, it’d be a great prizefight for both men. It would prove that both were daring competitors willing to risk their undefeated records in a dangerous voluntary duel. The match would also answer some critical questions.
Questions such as: can the cerebral and deadly accurate Abdullah Mason hold up to Kid Austin’s quick, ferocious power? To this point in time, we have not seen his chin really checked and inquiring minds want to know. At the same time, will the seemingly impatient and over-eager Schofield be able to get into punching range without being dissected up by the savage surgeon?
THE WINNER’S POT
Aside from getting critical data supplied about both pugilists, the victor would walk away shining very brightly. Schofield would have Mason’s valuable scalp in his possession and the ability to pressure Stevenson into honoring his word about facing him. Even if he didn’t get the fight, Kid Austin would have a much brighter light glowing on him as a result.
If Abdullah Mason prevailed, like Schofield, he would have collected the most treacherous scalp of his career. Even better though, as Kid Austin is ranked #4 (WBA), a win over him would almost certainly guarantee Mason a top fifteen ranking with the sanctioning body. At this point, Mason is not listed in the top fifteen of any of the four sanctioning bodies.
So for all the entertainment and career-advancing motivations listed above, Mason versus Schofield would make one fantastic event. Let’s hope that we get it this summer!
