Abraham Montoya Picks Up Wide Scorecards Over Joseph Diaz
Looking to get his career back on track, former IBF junior lightweight champion Joseph “Jojo” Diaz (33-7-1, 15KO) came up short against Abraham “Fily” Montoya (23-6-1, 14KO) in a lightweight battle.
The beginning rounds didn’t produce much action as both men found success landing counter shots. Jojo attacked the body and did a good job of using the angles to land the left hand.
Fily used the jab to push back the former one-time champion and put Diaz on the backfoot with body shots. Also, he kept coming forward and landed the occasional counterpunches.
In addition, Diaz started boxing well and was defensively sound en route to taking control of the fight and found a home for the straight right hand.
In the closing rounds, Montoya refused to give up and landed hard shots that momentarily froze his opponent. Diaz cranked up the offensive and was landing the more eye-catching shots. But, his lack of head movement resulted in him getting hit with the straight right hand.
When the final cards were tallied one judge scored it for Diaz 98-92 and two judges scored it 98-92, and 97-93 for Montoya. These scorecards were terrible as 3kingsboxing scored it 96-94 Diaz.
