Alberto Puello Beats Sandor Martin by Split Decision
In his first defense, WBC super lightweight champion Alberto “La Avispa” Puello (24-0, 10 KO’s) retained his title versus tricky challenger Sandor Martin (42-4, 15 KO’s) by way of a razor thin split decision win.
Through the first quarter of the bout, the two men were very evenly matched. During this phase, Puello claimed dominance with the jab while Martin submitted the better body work and dictated the overall pace and spatial dynamics. Despite catching one another several times, neither would notably hurt the other anywhere in the fight.
The middle rounds saw Martin have a spike in aggression by digging in with his power shots and a fixed dedication to the ribs. This shift carried weight until the eighth and ninth rounds. Here, Puello dug in and fought back with ferocity, throwing extra bite into his attack. This nip and tuck nature maintained until the final bell.
When the fight went to the cards, Puello prevailed by way of split decision with the scores of 115-113 for Martin, and 115-113 and 116-112 for Puello.
