In a battle of friends turned foes, top-rated contender Alfredo Santiago (17-2, 8KO) defeated fellow Dominican and former junior lightweight champion Javier “El Abejon” Fortuna (39-6-1, 28KO).

Santiago used those long arms perfectly by landing hard jabs. His ability to use the angles before firing the right hand was masterful.

Yet, the crafty veteran Fortuna scored with the straight left hand. However, he couldn’t avoid the counter-uppercuts Santiago landed while on the move.

In the middle rounds, Santiago stalked his fellow countryman with hard jabs. He controlled the fight with movement, speed, and angles. Yet, El Abejon used those crafty moves to score the occasional left-hand.

At the start of the ninth round, Fortuna’s corner stopped the fight, saving their fighter from taking any more punishment. This was a big win for Santiago, who called out WBO champion Teofimo Lopez, Arnold Barboza, and Isaac Pitbull” Cruz.
