Recaps for the preliminary card for Eleider Alvarez vs Sergey Kovalev 2
Murtazaliev vs Ayala
In a Super-welterweight bout, young prospect Bakhram Murtazaliev (14-0, 11KO) had an impressive ninth round knockout against a tough Elvin Ayala (29-12-1, 13KO). In a grueling back-and-forth, the younger fighter was able to land crushing punches that sent the veteran fighter to the canvas. After beating the count, the ref would step in as the younger fighter closed in for the finish.
Day vs Iliev
The next super welterweight fight was between WBC Continental Champion Pat Day (16-2-1, 6KO) and undefeated prospect Ismail Iliev. This high octane bout was for the vacant IBF Intercontinental title.
The champion would go to the body early, which would pay dividends as the fight went on. The young prospect would have moments thanks to his mix of pressure mixed and effective aggression. However, it was the experience of the champion that would carry the fight in the late rounds.
Day won by unanimous decision. Picking up the IBF minor title is a definite boost for his career.
Sanchez vs Olea
Undefeated prospect Jason Sanchez was on full display in his featherweight, eight round bout against Daniel Olea (13-6-2, 5KO). The young prospect, from the sound of the bell, showed that he was on another level over the aforementioned opponent.
He landed a big overhand right that sent the veteran boxer to the canvas. Olea never recovered; getting up only to be on unstable legs caused the ref to halt the fight in the second round.
Alimkhanuly vs Martinez
There was a super-middleweight contest that took place with undefeated Janibek Alimkhanuly stepping up in competition against Steven Martinez. This was a glorified sparring session for the young prospect.
He Controlled every aspect of the fight, landing vicious body shots that hurt the opponent throughout the match. In round three, he dropped his opponent with a delayed body punch.
The corner had finally seen enough and threw in the towel, stopping the fight. Trainer Buddy McGirt’s fighter remained undefeated.
These are the fighters of the future showcasing their skills on this great night of boxing on ESPN.
