Canelo Alvarez Files a Lawsuit Against His Promotional Team!
It’s been no secret over the years there has been tension between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (53-1-2, 36 KOs) and Oscar De La Hoya. To say they have a frosty relationship is being polite. It now looks as if things may have come to a point where their differences may now be beyond the pale.
According to The Athletic, on September 8 at the Los Angeles Federal Court, Alvarez filed a lawsuit against De La Hoya, Golden Boy Promotions and the DAZN streaming service. With this, boxing’s biggest star is looking to take part in fights outside the promotional service of Golden Boy and DAZN ASAP!
The association between all parties is complex. As a result of both his accomplishments in the ring and his business acuity outside the ring, the 30-year-old from Guadalajara, Mexico is the highest-grossing boxer in the world. Part of that business acumen included the eye-staggering 11-fight, $365 million deal he signed with DAZN in 2018.

THE ROOT OF PROBLEMS
However, despite his success, an increased level of distrust has grown over the years between he and De La Hoya. The roots of the problem stem from Alvarez blaming the promoter for failed negotiations against Sergiy Derevyanchenko in August 2019. The result saw Alvarez being stripped of his then-IBF Middleweight World Title.
Ever since, things have been on shaky ground. The distrust between the two even indirectly affected other fighters both men associate with. One example is lightweight contender Ryan Garcia and his extension with the promotional company in September 2019.
When Oscar De La Hoya described his dealing with Alvarez as “strictly business”, what was chatter inside boxing circles became public fodder for everyone. In light of all that’s been branded about behind the scenes, it was bound that something was going to pop off!
What does this mean for Alvarez and his boxing future? What about Golden Boy Promotions as well as DAZN? In what has been a strange year for the sport to say the least, things have become even more interesting.
