Alycia Baumgardner Confident She Stops Mikaela Mayer When They Fight!
Newly crowned WBC female junior lightweight champion Alycia “The Bomb” Baumgardner (11-1, 7KOs) is still on cloud nine after her big upset win over former WBC champion Terri Harper (11-1-1, 6KOs) this past November. The victory was brutal as The Bomb left Harper out cold on her feet in the fourth round.
Not only did the win make her a champion, it also put a bullseye on her back from the fellow champions in her division. In particular is one unified junior lightweight champion, Mikaela Mayer (16-0, 5KOs). The two have gone back and forth on social media trading insults. So far it hasn’t resulted in a unification bout happening.
I AM THE BOMB
Not suffering from a lack of confidence Baumgardner was asked about Mayer’s comments regarding her and also gave a prediction on what happens when they fight. She told Behind The Gloves the following:
“It is personal because there’s a difference when someone speaks about somebody and when they speak on them. You know, Mikaela was speaking on me, like, ‘oh, who said Alycia was a puncher? Oh, look at her resume.’ It was all down talk, nothing positive.
So again when I went into the ring and I proved that I was a puncher, that I can box and that I am who I am, and the best at 130, I proved that. And, I think obviously I have a world title, she’s going to want to fight me, I’m going to want to fight her.
But the talk was just different. The talk was different and so [….] yeah, yeah it was in a more disrespectful way. Like, give me my credit because I didn’t have the TV fight, I didn’t have the best promoter, but I had my chance and I made that opportunity for what it was and I had an outstanding performance. Like, she’s not doing that.
You’re (Mayer) not getting knockouts like I am and I went over there the underdog and knocked Terri Harper out in the fourth round, so that speaks volumes. That speaks a lot of volumes from, ‘oh who’s this girl?’ No, it’s Alycia. So, you know, that’s just how I felt about it.”
On if she stops Mikaela Mayer:
“Yeah I do, I definitely do. I do stop Mikaela.”
From the looks of things, it seems as though Baumgardner is being positioned by her co-promoter, Eddie Hearn, to take on WBA champion Hyun Mi Choi (19-0-1, 5KOs) in a unification bout later in 2022. The winner of that bout would presumably go on to face Mayer in a junior lightweight undisputed title clash.
Let’s hope that these two ladies get the opportunity to do the talking with their fists sometime in 2022.
