Coach Calvin Ford Adds Isaac Cruz to List of Potential Next Fights for Tank

There’s no doubt that Regular WBA lightweight champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis (29-0, 27 KO’s) is coming off the biggest win of his career. Tank accomplished this by stopping popular Golden Boy Promotions pushed fighter Ryan Garcia with a seventh round body shot. With the win, still undefeated and having earned massive pay-per-view sales, the boxing world is wide open for Tank Davis. Yet, if his chief second, Calvin Ford, had his way, as told to Mill City Boxing, Tank would glove up for Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz (24-2-1, 17 KO’s) in his next outing.

“The only person on the list that has that backing behind them, and I didn’t put on the list, and that’s Cruz, The Pitbull. Loma was on there, Shakur was on there, Devin was on there and Martin was on there. But Cruz – that is the one that I would go get because we made him a star and he comes to fight.”

Some may find this wish a bit confusing. This is because Tank Davis already beat Cruz by way of unanimous decision back on December 5, 2021. There is no doubt that it was not the cleanest performance of his career, yet there was no controversy involved. After suffering the second loss of his professional career to Tank, Cruz would go on to secure two wins over Yuriorkis Gamboa and Eduardo Ramirez. Neither Ramirez nor Gamboa are making any real noise or waves in the sport.

WHO YOU WANT NEXT?!

When reviewing Tank as a fighter, he certainly has good defense, a high IQ, patience and debilitating power. In fact, the one knock against Davis is his lackluster resume. The Baltimore native has routinely been accused of facing older or smaller fighters with a suspicious frequency. So with fighters like Vasiliy Lomachenko, Shakur Stevenson and undisputed 135-pound champion Devin Haney running around, seeking a rematch with Cruz does sound a bit odd.

If putting the already-mentioned names to the side, there is still undefeated, talented opposition with healthy fan bases available. Boxers such as Frank Martin and Olympian Keyshawn Davis would jump at the chance to dance with Davis. Actually, between the two, a rematch with Ryan Garcia would seem a better option than Cruz.

Just because Coach Ford threw Cruz’s name on the table however, this doesn’t mean that’s who Team Davis will face next. In fact, it’s safe to say it’ll be weeks, if not months, before Tank has another opponent officially announced. So let’s just wait and see what they come up with. Whoever that person is however, let’s just hope that it’s a significant new challenge and not an unrequested rerun.
