Jerwin Ancajas eyeing a unification bout with Juan Francisco Estrada next!
Following his seventh round stoppage win over mandatory Ryuichi Funai on May 4, IBF super flyweight champion Jerwin Ancajas is now on a mission to fight the best of the best in the division with one goal in mind: unification!
His preferred target is a bout with WBC champion Juan Francisco Estrada. The latter defeated Srisaket Sor Rungvisai to win the title on May 26.
According to international matchmaker Sean Gibbons, Top Rank is looking to have Ancajas back in the ring early this fall; sometime between late September to early October. Gibbons said a fight with Estrada is the top choice!
“If you look at the top 115 pounders, it’s Estrada, then Jerwin second. Yafai, of course. Donnie Nietes is up there. The idea is to move forward to make the fight with Estrada. That’s what we told Top Rank.”
Gibbons also stated the IBF champion is fixed on fighting the Mexican champion. His win over Funai was a mandatory title defense. That means the Filipino champ can afford to make an optional defense of the IBF belt this fall.
Estrada has already been vocal about this potential showdown in the past. Almost immediately after becoming champion, he mentioned wanting a bout with Ancajas, previosuly reported here!
There is a history and a rivalry between fighters from Mexico and the Philippines, including Pinoy Pride, which is a series of bouts pitting fighters from the two countries.
