Andy Cruz Reportedly has Escaped Cuba and is Seeking to Turn Pro!
In June of 2022, 3Kings Boxing reported that Cuban amateur star Andy Cruz had defected from his native country. Now, according to Daniel Malas, CEO of the media source Swing Competo LLC, Cruz is currently in the Dominican Republic with aspirations to turn professional and find freedom.
The 27-year-old was the star of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic box-offs, where he won a Gold medal in the lightweight division. Most pundits tabbed Cruz as the best boxer in the entire tournament.
His potential in the pro ranks is immense. As an amateur, Cruz displayed his agility and fluidity with great fundamentals. He seems to be one of those rare fighters who possess what old-school heads like to call ‘radar’, the ability to see and pinpoint punches, then easily avoid them. He will be a coveted prospect for promoters hoping to sign him.
Cruz has attempted to defect on numerous occasions. One such attempt happened in June of 2022 when he was a no-show at the 2022 Playa Girón National Boxing Tournament in Cuba. He was found and eventually deported back. Now finally away, the next step is to go through the proper procedures for his professional career. The hope is that his pro career will begin in the United States at some point in 2023. Keep tuned to 3Kings Boxing for further updates.
