Angelino Cordova Upsets Acosta; Chavez Folds Nieves With A Body Shot

In an action-packed flyweight battle, Angelino Cordova (18-0-1, 12KO) remained unbeaten after upsetting Angel Acosta (23-4, 22KO) via unanimous decision. The volume-punching of Cordova was the story of the fight. He threw several flurries at the beginning of the contest that prevented Acosta from being able to mount any offense. However, Acosta started letting his hands go and wobbled Cordova a few times with counter-left hooks.

In round four, the referee, after a few warnings, took a point away from Cordova for hitting behind the head. It was a tight fight down the stretch, as Cordova continued to throw punches like a Tasmanian devil, with Acosta closing out the rounds strong by landing the more telling punches. One judge scored it 96-93, as the other two had it 95-94 in favor of Cordova. 3Kings Boxing had it 95-94 for Acosta. This was a big win for the unknown Venezuelan, who picked up the vacant WBO International title in the process.

JORGE CHAVEZ DEVASTATES ALBERTO NIEVES

Featherweight prospect Jorge Chavez (6-0, 5KO) bodied Alberto Nieves (4-3-1, 2KO) in five quick rounds. Chavez started slow, coming forward behind the jab, fighting well off the front foot. He did a good job cutting off the ring and began to find a home for the uppercut.

As the fight continued, Chavez’s hand speed, defense, and combination punches kept Nieves in retreat mode. In round five, Chavez folded his opponent like a lawn chair twice after landing two picture-perfect right hooks to the body. The referee quickly waved off the fight following the second knockdown. Chavez showed serious growth and maturity in this fight.
