Angelo Leo Easily Decisions Eduardo Baez
Former WBO super bantamweight champion Angelo “El Chinito” Leo (23-1, 11KO) picked up a win in a featherweight showdown against Eduardo “El Gemelo” Baez (23-6-2, 9KO).
El Gemelo started fast out the gate with hard right hands and lightning-fast punches. Yet, Leo quickly turned things around by working behind the jab and going to the body early.
El Chinito kept Baez on the backfoot by landing sharp right-hand counters. He got the better of the exchanges whenever they fought in the pocket and found a home for the uppercut.
Things didn’t get any better for Baez over the next couple of rounds as Leo couldn’t miss with those counter-right hands and left hooks. His defense, footwork, power, and counter-punching were clicking on all cylinders.
The one-time WBO title challenger found a second wind in the second half and landed a few hard right hands. But Leo regained the momentum by fighting behind the jab, scoring those power shots. He went back to attacking the body and landed hard uppercuts that had Baez in semi-survival mode.
As the final bell sounded, one judge scored it 97-93, with the other two seeing it 98-92 for Leo. This was a good win for the #7 (WBA) and #13 (IBF) contender, who is looking to get into the title picture.
