Cecilia Braekhus on Legacy
On August 15, undisputed world welterweight champion “First Lady” Cecilia Braekhus (36-0, 9 KO’s) will take on the very dangerous and determined WBC and WBA world super lightweight champion Jessica “CasKilla” McCaskill (8-2, 3 KO’s) in a highly anticipated prizefight. The main event bout is a very exciting motivator for Braekhus because she feels that this fight will directly advance her overall legacy.
WELL-EARNED LIMELIGHT
On the one hand, women’s boxing has been around for more than a hundred years. Yet at the same time, unfortunately, female fighters all too often don’t garner the same attention, respect or pay as the men. This is why the First Lady is so proud of her personal career.
Over the years, she has been a trailblazer in the amateurs due to her accomplishments in the Olympics. Also, she has set tremendous records as a professional and constantly makes a point to advocate for her fellow female pugilists. That is why Braekhus is so appreciative when her accomplishments in the sports are recognized and celebrated by those in the boxing community.
“What I enjoy about it is people are now starting to recognize my career. It’s not easy being a world champion, getting to be a world champion it’s a lot of work. But staying at the top is also a lot of work, so I am very glad that I am getting that kind of recognition from the new fans; it’s very special to me.”
WHEN IT’S ALL OVER
Barekhus’ past deeds are truly impressive. Yet, she is not one to sit back and become complacent. She is a forward thinking fighter. That’s exactly why she continues to push the line and take dangerous bouts like the one that she has with McCaskill.
“I feel like I am living my legacy right now actually because I feel I am a part of the development in women’s boxing. I feel like I am the part who has been pushing forward so women can go to the Olympics, so women can headline fights, that women can be better paid, I feel like I am part of that puzzle and that when I hang up my gloves, that is something that is going to make me feel very, very good about myself and my career.”
THE NEXT TUSSLE
Yet, before she can go so far as retiring, First Lady Braekhus must first deal with intense and hard charging Jessica McCaskill! And her fight with CasKilla has her energized and ready for action.
“I’m excited to have the main fight on Saturday and I know that Jessica is ready, I am ready! Its going to be a great night, it’s going to be a great fight!”
