Boxing In Mexico To Return In June

Fights are slowly but surely returning when it comes to boxing. First, there was news of Top Rank CEO Bob Arum’s plans to stage events in Las Vegas starting in June. Now it appears that Zanfer Promotions are also making similar plans for the sport’s return.

Fernando Beltran, organizational President of Zanfer Promotions, disclosed to ESPN that they are finalizing four separate fight cards set for June in Mexico.

The cards would feature the likes of WBC junior lightweight champion Miguel Berchelt, WBO junior featherweight champion Emanuel Navarrete and WBO junior flyweight champion Elwin Soto, among others.

Neither of those fighters will have world titles on the line, with Beltran saying that the target locale is TV’s Aztec studios.

“We plan on doing it in June. We’ll have a really active schedule behind closed doors. We’re working on final details so that we can make a formal announcement.”

If everything can be put together, here’s how things would go:

  • Navarrete would headline a card on June 6 against an opponent to be determined.
  • 21-year-old rising junior welterweight undefeated prospect Omar Aguilar and current WBC champion Jackie Nava would be featured on a card on June 13.
  • Former WBC world Bantamweight champion Luis Nery would headline a card on June 20.
  • Miguel Berchelt and Elwin Soto would fight on the same card on June 27.

It seems the sweet science is taking the necessary measures to adjust for the COVID-19 pandemic. All the steps taken are to ensure the safety of all parties involved going forward. For fans, they are just happy that fights are inching towards happening again on a regular basis.
