David Benavidez-Lionel Thompson Possible for April 18
Newly crowned WBC super middleweight champion David Benavidez (22-0, 19KOs) is looking at a possible ring return of April 18. No it won’t come against mandatory challenger Avni Yildirim (21-2, 12KOs). Unfortunately, he’ll now be sidelined after undergoing surgery on his shoulder.
Instead, he’ll possibly face longtime fringe contender Lionel Thompson (22-5, 12KOs). Thompson is coming off a very good performance and surprising victory over former IBF super middleweight champion Jose Uzcategui (29-4, 24KOs) in December of 2019.
With a potential unification bout with IBF super middleweight champion Caleb Plant (20-0, 12KOs) looming down the road, Benavidez will want to start his 2020 ring campaign off with bang!
For Thompson, this opportunity is one he’s been seeking that has alluded him throughout his career. He’ll be a heavy underdog in the match-up. However, he has the skills to make this fight somewhat interesting for as long as it lasts.
3kingsboxing.com will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available.
