David Benavidez Feels the WBC Should Force Canelo’s Hand
In David “The Mexican Monster” Benavidez’s (26-0, 23 KO’s) head, he should be the next in line for a shot at the WBC title. This shouldn’t be too hard to figure out why. Benavidez has already won more than one title eliminator and he is literally the interim WBC 168-pound champion. Not only this, the public has long clamored to see a clash between The Mexican Monster and undisputed super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (58-2-2, 39 KO’s).
So it’s no wonder why Benavidez is both confused and worried by the fact that his divisional rival, Caleb Plant, just won a WBC title eliminator of his own. Naturally he is having thoughts that he will be swindled out of his lead position in line. Of course, this would be an injustice. Sadly this is boxing, so it’d be just another Tuesday!
RESPECT MY POSITION!!
Nevertheless, The Mexican Monster told Fight Hype that he earned his position and he means to do whatever it takes to maintain it and advance.
“I’m #1 contender to fight for the belt, you know I have proved myself over and over again. If I have to keep proving myself until I get that fight, that’s what I am going to do. I’m not going to lose to nobody! If I got to win ten more fights to get to Canelo, that’s what I’m going to do. It’s my right, I’ve won the right to fight for the belts. If they don’t want to give it to me, I’m going to go take it from them!”
In the end though, Benavidez is a fighter and concerns himself with the tasks of a fighter. With that being said, he feels that now it’s up to the sanctioning bodies, WBC in particular, to do the right thing.
“It’s the WBC’s job to tell them, ‘hey, like what the fuck? We promised him a belt, he’s fought title eliminators, he has an interim belt’. If rankings and all that shit doesn’t matter, then why do they have the rankings in place? I understand it’s Canelo and he does what he wants but, at the end of the day, I feel like you have to respect the ranking system.”
While it’s a huge “if,” let’s see if the WBC steps up and honors its own regulations.
