The Fanbase Picks and Chooses Who is Boring with Bias

The sport of boxing can be biased at times when it comes to black fighters. Hall of Fame Inductee Floyd “Money” Mayweather and multi-divisional champion Shakur “Fearless” Stevenson are hit with the boring tag after one fight. What makes this an unfair judgment is that other fighters, like Ryan Garcia or Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, don’t receive the same treatment.

For years, Mayweather was criticized for being called a boring fighter despite scoring high-profile knockouts over Diego Corrales and Arturo Gatti. Even the more defensive-minded Mayweather persona still scored stoppages over Ricky Hatton and Victor Ortiz.

Against Oscar Valdez, Jamel Herring, and Shuichiro Yoshino, Stevenson put on superb offensive performances. Yet, he is only remembered for his poor performance against Edwin De Los Santos. In fact, boxing fans use this narrative to justify Gervonta Davis not having to fight him.

Devin Haney is experiencing the same treatment. After having exciting fights with Joseph Diaz, Vasyl Lomachenko, Jorge Linares, and George Kambosos twice, he is now dubbed a boring fighter. This is due to his performance against Jose Ramirez.

Yet, Canelo’s fight with William Scull was a complete snoozefest but fans blamed Scull. Garcia laid an egg in his performance against Rolando Romero and never received the boring fighter tag.

The bias needs to stop as everyone needs to be held to the same standard equally across the board.
