Bill Haney challenges Rolly Romero to backup the tough talk

Sadly for WBC World lightweight champion Devin “The Dream” Haney (26-0, 15 KO’s), he finds himself ensnared in a vexing catch-22. On the one hand, fighters love to have his name come spilling out their mouths. Of course, there is no denying that he is a premium talent and his WBC title makes him a juicy target for all in the division. Yet, on the other hand, despite all the grandiose tough talk, there is a distinct lack of willingness to make the fight happen. In fact, three straight mandatory challengers (Ryan Garcia, Javier Fortuna and Joseph Diaz) have all passed on their shots at his WBC strap.

WITNESS PROTECTION ALL-STAR??

Then there is the case of Rolando “Rolly” Romero (14-0, 12 KO’s). Romero has been trashing Haney’s name and calling him out since 2020. Even now, Rolly is back undermining The Dream on his social media accounts. On the surface, it all looks and sounds great, but many question how serious the Las Vegas native really is about securing this bout. One of those people is Bill Haney, who is Devin Haney’s father and chief second. In a recent interview with Fight Hype, Bill Haney voiced his thoughts on how Rolly, in relation to his son, is just another loud talker devoid of any real merit.

“All I have to say about that is you’ve said a lot of things, Mr. Romero. You’ve said a lot of things, now is your opportunity to face Devin Haney and get a shot at this world title. You should be thankful to him [for] giving you a shot. Don’t downplay it, don’t start talking like a duck, right? Step up, backup your words, stop hiding. Where are you at?”

“…Rolly, stand up for everything that is right. If you got that blood in you, blood of a warrior, if you want to backup everything you said, come out the bushes! He looks good enough to get his ass whipped by Devin, come on out the bushes!”

MAKE THE FIGHT!!

Given that neither fighter has another prizefight scheduled, this would certainly make for one fan-friendly grudge match. Let’s hope that if they can’t secure a bigger fight in the very near future, then they duel one another. Yet, whether they do fight next or not, it’s just about a 100% guarantee the bad blood and slick talk from these two camps will not stop any time soon!
